An October 2017 attempt to convert the Christopher Columbus statue into an altar memorializing the genocide victims of Columbus’ contact with this hemisphere created an opportunity to bring forward the decades long struggle to remove this monument at Grand Park. This action uplifted the experiences of the Taino Peoples who first made contact with Columbus. A parallel push by the Native American Indian Commission and other Indigenous allies resulted in the removal of the statue that stood for 45 years.
